MyGamePlan is unique in measuring individual tasks for players or behavior that you expect from your players or the whole team. To do this we have to be capable to measure the most detailed principles defined by a club and link this to video.

Often, to measure one principle there are several approaches to evaluate this.

If we take a look at building up from the goalkeeper, it's a popular strategy to find the defensive midfielder between the lines to escape the pressure of the opponent and move the ball forward. Let's dive into this example to evaluate how we can best measure this.

Measuring success on a team level

Before diving into the individual behavior you are looking to measure, it's good to start with what you are aiming for with this strategy.

You can measure the total amount of times you can reach your defensive midfielder during build up, or you can evaluate the percentage of times you can reach him after a short goal kick.

For example in the Premier League, we see that Liverpool leads to table for this criteria, where they find the defensive midfielder in 12% of their short goal kicks.

You can also measure the progression to the attacking half or final third from a short goal kick to measure how effective this strategy is.

We see that in this metric, Liverpool drops to second place, while Luton Town get's to the first place. Obviously the direct play after a short goal kick of Luton Town is the explanation for this, that's why it's always important to also evaluate the total amount versus the relative amount.

Measuring positioning of the No. 6

From the POV of the number 6 or 8 we have to make sure that he is at the right position at the right time, this is also something you can verify using MyGamePlan.

Because you cannot coach a player just on data, all the moments of expected and unwanted behaviour automatically gets linked to video.

A player can get immediate feedback of his correct and incorrect position during the short goal kick

Progression of the ball after a short goal kick

When the defensive midfielder get's possession after the short goal kicks we also want to measure if his movement is forward driven or not. This is the next evaluation we can make with a tracker.

These three trackers give us the perfect evaluation of a strategy that is chosen by the club or coaching staff in build-up.

  • Measuring quantity on a team level, with the total amount of passes following the strategy
  • Measuring the quality on a team and individual level about actual progression to the final third
  • Measuring the quality of performance of the individual, in this case the defensive midfielder
